Hoodia and Hunger
Perhaps you've already heard of hoodia, the unsightly and unpleasant tasting cactus-like plant which grows in the Kalahari Desert.
In recent months, hoodia has received an overwhelming amount of attention from the media for it's ability to suppress hunger with no discernable negative side effects.
But how exactly does this plant fool our brains into thinking we are full?
Hoodia contains, among other things, steroidal glycosides.
These glycosides, when consumed, act on the hypothalamus of the human brain in much the same way that an increase in the amount of sugar in the bloodstream would.
When the hypothalamus believes that blood sugar is high, it sends out a signal to the body that no more sustenance is required.
Effectively, one of the components of hoodia's biological make-up tricks our brains into thinking we have already consumed enough caloric intake, which consequently suppresses our hunger.
Several studies have been performed on both animals and humans which have shown conclusive results that hoodia is effective in facilitating weight loss.
The only known side effect of hoodia is a feeling of overall well-being which accompanies appetite suppression.
While the majority of the human studies performed on hoodia have involved participants who suffer from obesity, animal studies indicate that hoodia may be just as effective in helping those who are in reasonably good health but would like to lose a small amount of weight.
Unlike ephedra and caffeine based stimulants, hoodia demonstrates no cardiovascular side effects such as thermal or nervous system acceleration or increased blood pressure.
While the medical community continues to study what many are calling the greatest weapon in the fight against obesity, several manufacturers have made hoodia available to the public in pill or patch form.
Perhaps the magic pill that science has been searching for decades has been with us all along, slowly growing in the Kalahari Desert.

Lately our email boxes have been filled with come-on's for a weight-loss product called Anatrim, which appears to contain (or claims to contain) extracts from the Hoodia gordonii plant, a suculent that grows naturally in South Africa.
The emails claim that Hoodia will help you lose weight without any unwanted side effects. There may be some truth to this claim about Hoodia itself, but the products that claim to contain Hoodia may not do you any good.
If you watched Leslie Stahl eat a bit of hoodia in the Kalihari Desert
on 60 Minutes, you know that this plant
may actually contain a compound that suppresses the appetite. However, the active ingredient in Hoodia gordonii is patented, and it is not legal at this time for any company to sell Hoodia in a weight loss product except for the patent's owner. That company isn't ready

Hoodia And Weight Loss
San tribesmen of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa have one of the oldest primitive cultures in existence, maybe as old as 100,000 years. They are hunter-gatherers and go on long hunting expeditions. Given the harsh desert and scarcity of game, they chew on a succulent plant called Hoodia Gordonii to keep off hunger and thirst.
In 1937 a Dutch anthropologist recorded, this fact and in the 1960s CSIR, the South African research council, started a study on the plant. In 1997 CSIR took out a patent on a molecule of Hoodia, named P57, as an aid in weight-loss treatment. In 1998 they made an agreement with a British company, Phytopharm, to test and market the product.
Phytopharm carried out the usual clinical trails of P 57 and announced a very positive result in 2001.
In a double-blind study volunteers were given 400mg of dried Hoodia per day. After 15 days they reduced their calorie intake by 1,000 per day. The control group did not show any appreciable...
